What do I major in if i want to work at a prestigious ad agency or in magazines, music, or fashion industry?

I was thinking something broad, like commmunications or advertising with a minor in graphic design. I would like to have some kind of lucrative career in magazines, the music industry, an ad agency or maybe the fashion industry, like a clothing line, or maybe something like an art director or something more on the business side. I am so confused. Here are some programs I am considering:

Advertising Communications at St. John's University

Go for the digital, if this suites your desire to manipulate objects. My friend works for a newspaper (not so glamorous) but pays the bills.

Another area is mass communciation if you want to be a journalist for a magazine. Advertising majors tend to focus on what you want to exploit ahem advertise. I would go into mass communication. I have taking 2 classes here at state and though not required for my economics major, definitely an area of interest. I love taking at least one class that has nothing to do with my major, I'm sick like that LOL. JR
It looks like you did some great research and you already have your answer. The beauty of the industry that you want to go into is that they really look at skills that you developed more than the exact degree you achieved.

I would recommend pursuing a degree in something that is closely related to what you want to do (and luckily you already provided yourself a list of degree choices) and just focusing on the specific point of the industry you are passionate about...honestly the rest is up to who you know and luck.

Some degree recommendations could be broadcasting, marketing, business, or even fashion design...it honestly depends on what YOU KNOW YOU ARE MORE PASSIONATE ABOUT. That way you know you will succeed easier and achieve more...plus your credentials would look better to your future employer.

First ask yourself what is it exactly that you want to do for the agency....that would determine your degree choice. Network, network network in college, get some internships, start searching for jobs now as if you had your degree that way you will know what you will face once you hit the real job market.

Sorry for being long winded...I hope this helped some

Sincerely,

CM

PS. As far as college choices...Honestly to me, just don't go to some crappy school and you'll be fine...its the piece of paper you get in the end that really matters. The rest depends on personal prefrence.
