Can a geneticist determine if your child will have Down's syndrome?

I wasn't sure of the extent to which a genetic counselor could determine potential health problems in a child. Does anyone know?Can a geneticist determine if your child will have Down's syndrome?Did you have your prenatal screening done (a blood test?)



We cannot tell you for SURE if your baby has a genetic condition without diagnostic tests, but the screening can help us identify those who can benefit from further testing. And yes, ultrasounds MAY give some signs of a baby with DS, but the problem is that many babies without DS can show similar signs, and babies with DS might not show those signs at all.



The truth is that we can only give you a risk assessment (based on age and/or your prenatal screening results), which are your chances of having a baby with DS (like 1 out of 100, or 1 or one out of 10,000). But the only way to know for SURE is by a diagnostic test (CVS or amniocentesis).

My sister had to go talk to to a genetic counselor because she screened positive for down syndrome, and they pretty much said exactly that. Her baby ended up being fine, and the counselor said that usually when the are positive the babies don't have it, but they just have a higher chance to have it.Can a geneticist determine if your child will have Down's syndrome?Yes they can.

When you start going for prenatal care you have alot of blood work done, and in that testing the test for common genetic abnormalities such as down syndrome. Sometimes ultrasounds can give clues to wether a baby has DS or not.
